{"id":2469,"date":"2024-12-20T10:38:36","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T07:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kirjallisuuskalenteri.fi\/event\/swearing-in-the-nordics-contemporary-trends-english-and-media\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T00:00:03","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T21:00:03","slug":"swearing-in-the-nordics-contemporary-trends-english-and-media","status":"expired","type":"event_listing","link":"https:\/\/kirjallisuuskalenteri.fi\/sv\/event\/swearing-in-the-nordics-contemporary-trends-english-and-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Swearing in the Nordics: Contemporary trends, English and media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Join us at the Nordic library for an evening about swearing and the influence of English and social media on our language use in the Nordic countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ulrikke Rindal<\/strong>, Associate Professor from the University of Oslo, Norway, opens the event with a keynote on the mechanisms of how English-language media influences language and how media genres might limit register and allow performative monologues but yet not guarantee communication skills.<\/p>\n<p>After this, researchers\u00a0<strong>Helga Hilmisdottir<\/strong>\u00a0(PhD, University of Iceland),\u00a0<strong>Kristy Beers F\u00e4gersten<\/strong>\u00a0(Professor, S\u00f6dert\u00f6rn University, Sweden), and\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0(Docent, University of Helsinki) engage in a panel discussion about the use of swear words \u2013 and the research of them \u2013 in the Nordic context.\u00a0<strong>Jenny Sylvin<\/strong>\u00a0from the University of Helsinki will moderate the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>You also have a chance to get a drawing of your favourite swear word uttered by the comic character \u201cKiroileva siili\u201d, drawn live by cartoonist\u00a0<strong>Milla Paloniemi\u00a0<\/strong>during the event.<\/p>\n<p>Please observe that this event will be streamed; as a member of the public you may show on some footage and your questions to the panelists will be recorded. Comments from the event may also be used in the presenters\u2019 research on swearing.<\/p>\n<p><em>The discussion is part of SwiSca9: Raising Hel! -conference at the University of Helsinki by the research network Swearing in Scandinavia, a group of scholars united by the goals of conducting multidisciplinary research on the subject of swearing. Why do adolescents swear, and why is it easier to swear in English than in our mother tongue? Is English-language media really making young people better in English?
